Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such medications need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the way of the injections explains the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a intense return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
