The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
