Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
